Men’s Fairway Wood Buying Guide

Men Fairway Wood 4

There are several things to consider when choosing men’s fairway woods.

There are various models of fairway woods available in the market today. All of which are constructed with different features. Yet, they are all made with the same purpose, and that is to maximize the golfer’s ability to hit the ball and win the game.

Let’s take a quick glance of the wood’s history to understand it better. Before, the club heads were actually made of hardwood, usually hickory or persimmon. Thus, the name wood was used. It was in the 1980’s that metals became widely used because of versatility and availability. Usually, titanium and steel are the top priority.

Fairway on the other hand is the mown area of the golf course that golfers always target because this is considered the area with which the golfer can hit with an advantage. It is the area between the teeing ground and the putting green. It is important to note that fairway is always present on par-4s and par-5s but it is not on par-3s.

Woods are club heads that are used in fairways. Therefore, they are called fairway woods. They have larger and rounder heads and they are mostly used when the golfer wants to hit the ball to a longer distance.

Nowadays, a golfer’s bag usually contains three woods, the 1 wood, 3 wood and 5 wood. The 1 wood is also called the driver because it is used to launch the ball or hit the ball off the tee. The 3 wood and the 5 wood are usually called the fairway woods because they are used to hit the ball when the golfer is already in the fairway.

Things to Consider

There are four major things to consider before choosing the best men’s fairway woods.

Consider the Loft

The numbering of the woods says a lot about its loft. The number can be found at the sole of the club and also on the loft. The loft is the angle of the club head and it plays a big role in the trajectory and distance of the travel of the ball when hit. The woods are numbered in ascending order. It starts with 1 and usually goes in intervals of odd numbers. The driver which is the 1 wood has the lowest loft. It has a loft between 7 and 12 degrees. A 3 wood has a loft of between 15 and 18 degrees. A 5 wood has a loft between 20 and 22 degrees.

The higher the number of the wood, the higher is the loft. The higher the loft the higher is the trajectory.  Many manufacturers offer set up to 11 woods and has the highest loft. In the 1990’s the average loft of the woods is 7 degrees. However, more professional golfers have argued that a high launch with low spin can be achieved best using a higher lofted wood. Today most golfers carry with them woods with higher lofts.

Consider the Shaft

It must be remembered also the higher the loft, the shorter the shaft of the wood. Long shaft gives a bigger swing providing more power to go the long distance. The driver has the longest shaft. The 3 wood and the 5 wood has shorter shaft. Check the standard length for men’s fairway woods. For club heads made of titanium, the driver is 45 inches in length, the 3 wood is 43 inches and the 5 wood is 42 inches. For club heads made of steel the measurement is half an inch lower.

For a more accurate performance, the length of the shaft can be customized. Stand straight and measure the length from your wrist to the floor. Consult your supplier to help you with determining the correct length based on the measurements.

The weight of the shaft should be considered too. A shaft made of graphite can weigh between 60 to 90 grams. A shaft made of steel can weigh between 90 to 12 grams. Today, there are more manufacturers who offer ultra-light shaft that could weigh between 40 to 60 grams.

Test the feeling of the shaft to your hands. After all, this is the part that really connects the golfer to the club. Even if it has all the correct specifications if the feel is not right then its time to look something that really suits you.

Consider the Club Head Design

The most important features to consider of the club head design are perimeter weighting and center of gravity. Perimeter weighting is the even distribution of weight on the club head, and the center of gravity is the position of gravity within a club head. These two can affect the trajectory of the ball. A good perimeter weighting will result in a good hit and a low center of gravity will increase the height of the ball when hit. While the low profile and low center of gravity makes the ball airborne it also concerns other golfers about sky balls off the tee. So, now more golfers prefer club heads with deeper face and high center of gravity.

Consider the Sole Design

The sole design also contributes to making a good shot.  This is the part closest to the ground. When the club hits the ball, it will be an advantage if the sole will not create a drag. The flat and rounded edges of the wood’s sole make it glide smoothly on the grass to minimize turf drag. A convex design will make the sole push down the turf more effectively and ideal for ball that are on bad lies. This will provide a good follow through on the swing.

Choosing the right men’s fairway woods may not that be that easy. Just take time to think. Examine the feature that you need to have in your woods. You can base it on your skills and how do you want those skills to develop. You can mix and match until you find the one that is right for you.
